Amazon wants to build a "mobile" drone maintenance and delivery platform

2017-08-07

Amazon has come up with the idea of automatically delivering packages early on, but before the drone is put into practical use, there are still many problems to overcome. Recently, the company has submitted a number of patents covering "the arrangement of a drone honeycomb in densely populated areas", "drone package delivery with parachutes", "huge airships", etc. However, Business Insider exposed another new patent, a "mobile workstation" network based on ships, tractors, trains, or other vehicles, which can provide better services to high-demand areas.

This is a mobile joint delivery system that can serve as a maintenance center for Amazon drone fleets or as a warehouse for commodities. The patent describes a standard container equipped with an automatic door on the ceiling, supplemented by a search device, a landing surface that can be rotated vertically.

These containers can be attached to trains, container ships, tractors, and can be added with a maintenance vehicle equipped with an additional battery pack, robotic arms, and a computer system to allow it to communicate with the drone. If necessary, they can also move to a new location to receive a drone.

The maintenance vehicle is able to receive drones, replace batteries, and release it with cargo, and the patent describes ways to repair potentially damaged drones, but an Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the Business Insider report. The patent also explores the feasibility of deploying items using these mobile containers, and a second vehicle (or container) can carry a reasonable amount of items, further reducing the company's lead time.

In this example, after the order is submitted, Amazon can retrieve the item from the nearest operating center (the warehouse). But if the nearby transport truck happens to have goods, you can directly load the goods on the drone and send them out, and charge the battery after they return.

However, the patent does not mean that the company will definitely launch an actual system, it just shows that Amazon has ideas about this and how it might look like.
