Japanese century-old company miserable: Toshiba TV business is about to be acquired by Chinese companies

2017-04-10

In order to raise money to save the troubled nuclear power business, Toshiba, a veteran Japanese electronics company, had to prepare to sell its most core NAND flash memory business. Currently, the potential acquirers Broadcom and Hon Hai have both given quotations of 2 trillion yen. However, Toshiba's lack of money is still too big. It is impossible to fill the NAND business for sale, and it has to continue to sell. Toshiba's next business for sale may be the TV TV division, with the most likely acquirer being China Hisense Group.

Toshiba's NAND business is now their most valuable business, but NAND flash memory is Toshiba or the entire Japan's high-tech technology. The Japanese government is very sensitive to technology outflows, so Japanese media have been constantly reporting that Toshiba's NAND business cannot be sold to mainland Chinese companies, and even companies like Hon Hai that are close to mainland China are not good (although Boss Guo really wants to buy it), and the Japanese side is a US company.

It is still unclear who will sell the NAND business to, but there is definitely no chance for Chinese companies, because there is no Chinese company to participate in the bidding, and Unigroup, which is the least short of money, did not consider participating in the bidding this time. However, Toshiba is selling more than NAND, and the next one to be sold may be the TV TV business.

According to reports from Japan's Sankei Shimbun, Toshiba is considering selling its TV business next, and its potential acquirers are Turkey's Vestel and China Hisense Group. Toshiba hopes to complete the transaction in March next year, before the end of the current fiscal year.

The Turkish company has obtained Toshiba's brand license in Europe, but no matter how you look at it, it is the Chinese company that is most likely to win the bid. As early as 2016, Midea, China spent 51.4 billion yen to acquire 80% of Toshiba's white goods business equity and obtained 40 years of brand license.

Earlier, China Changhong Company also acquired Panasonic's Sanyo TV business, Haier also acquired Sanyo's white goods business, Lenovo earlier acquired IBM's Thinkpad and Japan's NEC's PC business. It is worth mentioning that Hisense also acquired the TV business and brand license of Japan's Sharp Company in the Americas, which happened before Hon Hai acquired Sharp. After Boss Guo took over Sharp, he also hoped to revoke Hisense's TV license, but Hisense disagreed.

Among the old Japanese electronic companies, except for Sony, Nikon and Canon, the "Made in Japan" and "Japanese brand" home appliance businesses of other companies are probably operated by Chinese companies.
