The founder of the Truck Gang Dai Wenjian creates an ecological truck system worth hundreds of billions of dollars

2016-06-12

Recently, at Alibaba Cloud Computing Industrial Park, Alibaba CTO Dr. Wang Jian said: "I cannot be sure whether Alibaba will make great contributions to society in the future or the Truck Gang will make great contributions to society.

This week ago, Li Keqiang inspected Qianhai WeBank and personally typed the computer Enter key. The first loan of China's Internet, 35,000 yuan, was distributed to Xu Jun, a truck driver from the Truck Gang. In 2015, WeBank will provide 30 billion yuan in loan credit to truck drivers on the Truck Buy platform.

When it comes to the truck gang, we have to start with the "gang leader" Dai Wenjian.

Entrepreneurship veteran

"I'm actually a serial entrepreneur," said Dai Wenjian.

In 1997, as co-founder, Dai Wenjian served as the first marketing director of Leshi Lighting, and built Leshi Lighting from scratch as the number one brand of commercial lighting in China in 7 years.

In 2005, Dai Wenjian left Leishi Lighting and established his own logistics company. In October 2006, in the highway project in Yunnan, the general contracted the transportation of steel and cement, and a total of 65 large trucks and more than 100 drivers were invested. The project ended and the profit was more than 50 million.

There are no new projects, but there are so many cars and drivers to keep. "It takes expenses every day when you open your eyes, and the monthly expenditure is more than 2 million." Dai Wenjian tried to let the convoy transport social supplies.

Once, a car transported goods from Nanning to Yibin. After arriving, I searched nearby for two days but couldn't find the return goods. I had to emptie for about 300 kilometers and run to Chengdu's Sichuan-Shaanxi freight market. It took another two days to finally find the goods, but the loading location was in Jiajiang County, Leshan City, 200 kilometers away.

"There was a business with a profit of more than 6,000 yuan, because of the 500-kilometer gas and tolls that were empty, plus the additional costs incurred by the vehicle and driver in four days, the remaining less than half."

Through this incident, Dai Wenjian keenly smelled the market opportunities. In April 2007, Dai Wenjian visited the United States and Europe for three months.

"Compared with Europe and the United States, China's road logistics is completely an original market, with a very low level of informatization. If a matching platform can be built to connect shippers and drivers, it will generate huge value." Dai Wenjian said.

Losing 30 million in 3 years

In Chinese history, most of the founders of dynasties fought from north to south, and few people fought from south to north.

So Dai Wenjian went to Beijing to establish Beijing Shanenyun League Technology Co., Ltd. to build a platform that matches the capacity of cargo owners and drivers and becomes the leader of the martial arts industry in the logistics industry. This is very similar to Jack Ma’s original intention when he founded Alibaba.

There are more than 17 million trucks nationwide, of which more than 5 million trucks run medium and long distances. How to integrate these highly fragmented and highly dynamic trucks?

"There was no mobile Internet in 2007, so we used the newly emerging GPS monitoring technology to build a national transportation resource sharing platform," said Dai Wenjian.

The difference between ideals and reality is often a slight mistake. "The 20,000 GPS terminals we gave to individual drivers did not have any rewards, while the 20,000 terminals we gave to corporate fleets would rather pay to convert them into management platforms than share capacity."

Three years of hard work and 30 million investment were wasted. GPS cannot be done, Dai Wenjian is at the crossroads of life.

In 2009, China Unicom released its 3G number, and in 2010, ZTE launched its first smartphone X876 that costs less than 1,000 yuan, and Dai Wenjian saw the dawn of the industry.

"At that time, China was bounded by the Yangtze River, and the degree of logistics informatization in the north and south was almost zero, and the north had already started to use call centers to match vehicles and goods since the pager era." Dai Wenjian decided to move the revolutionary base to Chengdu and continue his original intention of making his own vehicle and goods matching platform.

At this point, let’s review Dai Wenjian’s experience in the logistics industry. This is very similar to Jack Ma’s revolutionary line in Hangzhou, then went north to build a website, and finally returned to Hangzhou to establish Alibaba.

Dig deep into the holes and accumulate grain

The rigidity of truck drivers is the source of goods. Only by gathering the source of goods can the source of vehicles be gathered. Due to the failure of using GPS to integrate vehicle sources before, Dai Wenjian, who returned to Chengdu, decided to start with the integration of supply sources.

Dai Wenjian established Chengdu Yunli Technology Co., Ltd. and developed a software called logistics QQ that allows cargo owners to publish information online.

"At that time, less than 5 people were equipped with computers among the 100 logistics practitioners, which meant that the application software we developed could not be installed."

As a last resort, Dai Wenjian temporarily gave up promoting the "Logistics QQ" software and established 13 super QQ groups along the 13 provinces south of the Yangtze River, using a 500-person QQ group to cultivate users' information interaction habits. 13 QQ groups, one after another. Dai Wenjian made a decision: disband the QQ group and transfer the members in the group to the "Logistics QQ" software platform. In the end, about 60% of the original users transferred to the "Logistics QQ" platform.

Once the goods are available, the next step is to integrate the car. Dai Wenjian has developed the "Traffic Bang" APP, which allows truck drivers to use their mobile phone to publish empty car information, find sources of goods, calculate freight quotations, and additional functions such as insurance calculation and insurance. However, because truck drivers generally have low cultural level and low usage rate for smart products, solving drivers’ “surfing the Internet” is a huge problem. "Truck Bang" cannot be promoted online like pure Internet APP products.

Dai Wenjian brought truck drivers to gather by setting up physical stores, driver canteens, driver cinemas in the traditional logistics market. Establish a ground push force of hundreds of people, sell smartphones and navigation devices to drivers, and teach drivers to install and use the Truck Bang APP for free.

A well-known obstacle to the Internet changing traditional industries is "credit". How to ensure that the cars you find online are not scammers, and how to ensure that the source of goods you see online is real?

Dai Wenjian gave the answer:

We have strict offline certification processes for cargo owners and vehicles. For cargo owners, that is, logistics companies, we need to verify our business licenses and business locations; for trucks, we need to verify our vehicle driving licenses, driver's licenses, ID cards, etc.

In addition, we have done a lot of work in the authenticity of the information released, credit guarantee, transaction, payment, on-the-go monitoring, claims, customer service, etc.

For example, if a driver travels for an empty trip due to platform information, we will pay a minimum compensation of 500 yuan. In 2014, we paid more than 1.5 million yuan in this area, but we recovered more than 1.1 million yuan from the owner's side, which shows that most of it was not the subjective intention of the owner to cause the breach of contract. For cargo owners, if the trucks found on the platform cause cargo losses, we will pay 300,000 yuan. This has not happened yet.

So far, the Truck Bang has gathered certified trucks of 170,000 or 800,000 certified logistics companies, with more than 2 million medium and long-distance freight information every day, with more than 50,000 orders sold every day, and freight costs exceed 500 million. "In 2014, the trucks saved more than 10 billion yuan in fuel oil costs for trucks, and will save more than 50 billion yuan in fuel costs in 2015." Dai Wenjian said proudly.

"No matter how big the market value of Alibaba is," said Dr. Wang Jian. "I can't be sure whether Alibaba will make great contributions to society in the future or the Truck Gang will make great contributions to society."

Will be king

As mentioned earlier, the information technology of logistics in the north is more developed than that of the south, and dozens of companies of different sizes have built capacity matching platforms in the north.

"Starting on July 1, 2014, I personally directed a war and took down the seven northwest provinces in half a year. Dai Wenjian was so energetic, "Before this, we dared not speak out, worried that a rich opponent would appear in the north and fight against us like Kuaidi and Didi, so we would pay a huge price." Now we can say loudly that we are China's NO.1. ”

Free charges will inevitably be unstoppable. "The competitors come to poach our team and they can't poach them at all, because we have a lifetime commission system. Now we have more than 700 people, which will expand to 2,000 people in 2015."

An interesting episode is that when the truck helped to develop the market in Luoyang, Henan, local competitors issued an "announcement" to users:

User friends, National Logistics Information Network is a public logistics information platform certified by provincial and municipal transportation management departments. Recently, a website called "Logistics QQ" came to our city to destroy the market and installed its network under the guise of free, seriously interfering with the market order and affecting the normal use of Yitong. I hope that users and friends will recognize their essence, operate with integrity, and maintain a good distribution environment in Luoyang. If some users blindly use "Logistics QQ" and publish information, this platform will terminate their right to use Yitong and report to the Luoyang Municipal Transportation Management Bureau to cancel their road transportation business license.

In March 2014, Dai Wenjian established Guiyang Truck Bang Technology Co., Ltd. and invested in the intelligent vehicle networking industrial park that dispatches seamless loading of medium and long-distance trucks in China, and built a platform with functions including customer service centers, call centers, data centers and other functions.

In October 2014, it established a joint venture with listed company Aishde to develop smart terminal devices for the logistics industry, "such as large batteries, large speakers, and waterproof smartphones."

In January 2015, we reached a strategic cooperation with Tencent’s WeBank, with a platform loan of 30 billion yuan.

"Vehicle-to-goal matching is just the beginning. What Truck Help wants to build an ecosystem of the logistics industry, which will cover finance, insurance, used cars, auto parts and auto repairs, life services, group purchase and purchasing agents, etc. in the future," said Dai Wenjian. "In 2011, we sold 100 million navigation, electronic dogs and smartphones customized for drivers. In 2014, our restaurant revenue exceeded 40 million. There is a lot of room for expansion in the future. Take the tire market as an example, it is also a big gold mine of over 100 million."

There is a saying in the Internet industry: application-oriented companies are worth 1 billion, platform-oriented companies are worth 10 billion, and ecological companies are worth 10 billion. Dai Wenjian’s dream of building a $100 billion ecosystem is gradually becoming a reality.
